| 1.EDGE FINISHING - GENERAL |
| Our wide range of products condition the edges of strip material onstream. They are used in every major metalworking industry. Typically, they find applications in all coil processing lines for deburring or edge shaping, including tube and pipe mills, rollforming lines, slitting lines, punchpress and four slide machine operations, galvanizing lines and other continuous or cut strip lines.
Material thickness can range from 0.005 inch (0.12 mm) up to 1/2 inch (12.7 mm) or more. Any required width can be processed, with present machines operating up to 72 inches (183 cm). Any material linespeed can be accommodated, from near zero to over 1,000 feet/minute (305 m/minute). |
| 2. THE PROCESS |
| Many different processes are available; call us to help decide which is best for your product. Depending on the amount of treatment, edges can be merely deburred; or profiled to a round, beveled, square or cut rolled ro a specially shaped edge profile.
The processes are: A. Skiving, scarfing or cutting linearly uses special tools to remove the unwanted material, leaving the desired edge shape. There is no thickening or work hardening and this gives the most accurate edge treatment. However, tools must be replaced or sharpened at intervals. The process is similar to planing, but the material moves instead of the tool. We have greatly improved the skiving process by developing the now patented vibratory tooling. This improves finish and cutting precision and extends the process to the previously impossible speed range below planing speeds - below 40 feet/minute (12.2 m/minute). Vibratory tools enable more accurate cutting at all speeds reducing cutting pull forces to about 1/3rd of previous levels. This feature is very useful for pressfeeding and low pullforce rollforming lines and for precision skiving applications. |
